How can we advise patients who have difficulty thinking clearly to approach their recovery?

Advice from a Consultant Neurologist

Q. How do we support patients complaining of ‘brain fog’ with their recovery?

A. I would advise general measures to support memory such as:

  • Diagnosing and treating depression and anxiety
  • Limiting computer/smartphone use at night
  • Simplifying daily activities and not multitasking
  • Getting enough sleep
  • Keeping notes and lists to support activities of daily living
  • Moderating drug and alcohol use

These are just general principles, but we just don’t know enough yet to provide robust guidance. I would also add that supporting patients to negotiate with their employers is helpful. We know that reduced hours or adapted activities can support recovery
