PPE shortages and crowdfunding

In order to fast-track supplies of PPE, GOV UK have put in place temporary measures until the global supply chain is adequate to meet the UK’s needs.

These temporary measures include:

  • Allowing the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and Local Authorities to fast-track PPE through the product safety assessment process
  • Allowing PPE against COVID-19 onto the market which lacks the CE mark, as long as essential safety requirements are met

PHE have published guidance on considerations for acute PPE shortages:

  • The guidance outlines options for sessional use, reuse and alternatives to standard PPE

Crowdfunded appeals are making PPE to support the NHS (examples below)

Masks for heroes:

  • Are a charitable organisation paid for by crowdfunding
  • They supply PPE from established medical supply routes to frontline NHS staff
  • You can request face shields, FFP3 masks, surgical masks, surgical gowns or isloation gowns via this online form

3DCROWDUK:

  •  Is a voluntary organisation making single use, non CE marked face shields for healthcare staff
  • You can request these via this online form

Face Visors for the NHS, Care Staff & Key Workers:

  • St Joseph’s School, Salisbury are sourcing materials and crowd funding to make face visors for the NHS and Social Care
  • You can request visors via this online form

Covid Crisis Rescue (CCR):

  • Supply surgical masks, surgical gowns, face visors and gloves to frontline staff. Their average delivery times are London: 1-2 hours, Rest of the UK: 1-2 working days
