Recommendations for home blood pressure monitoring



Advising patients on how to monitor blood pressure reliably

This information is sourced from the British Heart Foundation (BHF):

  • Use a monitor which is validated
  • Use the appropriate cuff size (age adapted in children)
  • Take the BP at least 2 hours after taking any BP altering medication
  • Sit down for 10-15 minutes before taking the reading
  • Take the reading on the left arm
  • Take the reading again several minutes later
  • Take the reading at approximately the same time on three separate days and send the readings, alongside the pulse values, to your GP
