Last chance to register for free Pulse virtual event featuring new NICE diabetes guidance
GPs have one week left to sign up for a free two-day virtual CPD event featuring sessions across a variety of clinical topics, including how to understand NICE’s approach to managing type 2 diabetes.
The Pulse 365 event, on 19-20 May, is designed to support GPs in confident decision-marking as well as highlighting strategies for earlier diagnosis and management. Tickets can be found here.
Taking place on the first day, ‘Management of type 2 diabetes: the NICE way to do it’ will be presented by Dr Oluseyi Ogunmekan, GP wER in diabetes, and GP representative for the Diabetes Clinical Network.
This comes following final NICE guidance published in February which recommended that most people with type 2 diabetes should be offered SGLT-2 inhibitors much earlier in their treatment, as well as now being offered metformin alongside it.
The guidance also expanded access to GLP-1 receptor agonists – such as semaglutide, dulaglutide and liraglutide – and tirzepatide. This was recommended for people who were diagnosed before age 40, or are living with obesity, with NICE saying that around 810,000 more people could benefit from these medicines.
GP leaders told Pulse at the time that they will need ‘appropriate support’ to implement NICE’s guidelines ‘consistently and safely’, with concerns around a rise in prescribing and monitoring workload previously being raised.
Dr Ogunmekan’s session will focus on:
- Understanding NICE’s approach to managing Type 2 diabetes;
- Recognising how treatment choices are tailored based on comorbidities , hypoglycemia risk, weight and age
- The importance of ongoing monitoring and complication prevention.
Other sessions across the two days include: managing acne in primary care in the era of antimicrobial stewardship; updates in hypertension guidelines and consultation; an overview of cryotherapy/cryosurgery treatments in primary care for the removal of benign skin lesions – and more. The full agenda can be found here.
Worth up to 10 CPD hours, the virtual event is open to all UK GMC-registered GPs and is free to attend.
