Stephen Dorrell becomes chair of NHS Confederation

Former health secretary Stephen Dorrell has been named chair of the NHS Confederation.

Mr Dorrell, who was health secretary between 1995 and 1997, was the Conservative MP for Charlwood until this year’s general election.

He chaired the House of Commons health committee until stepping down in June last year and is currently a senior adviser on healthcare and the public sector at KPMG.

While chairing the health committee, Mr Dorrell sounded warnings over the Government’s Health and Social Care Act reforms – which he has labelled ‘a mistake’ – as well as over the Government’s programme for efficiency savings in the NHS.

Mr Dorrell, who is replacing Michael O’Higgins as chair of the commissioner and provider representative organisation, commented: ’I have always enjoyed working with the NHS Confederation. It is a privilege to be chosen as the chair of a trusted, credible and authoritative organisation.

’I look forward to working with key players in the system and all of our members as we embark on a journey to transform patient care.’
