Dr Peter Bennie has been elected as the new leader of the BMA in Scotland, succeeding Dr Brian Keighley who held the position for five years
The Glasgow based consultant psychiatrist stood against Dr Charles Saunders, a public health medicine consultant, for the position which is decided by the 32 voting members of BMA’s Scottish Council
He said of his victory: “I am immensely proud to have been elected as chairman of the BMA in Scotland. It is a great honour to represent and lead my profession at such a unique time in Scotland’s constitutional history.”
Dr Bennie previously served as chair of the BMA’s Junior Doctors Committee in both Scotland and the UK and is currently a member of the BMA’s UK Council.
The same election also saw Scottish GPC leader Dr Alan McDevitt and Dr Sally Winning elected as joint deputy chairmen of the BMA’s Scottish Council.
