Dr Clare Gerada has gone beyond the call of duty in grabbing headlines since taking over as RCGP chair, even contriving to generate thousands of hits on Pulse’s website after falling off her bike and breaking her foot.
Whether ramping up the college’s opposition to the health bill or taking on the tabloids for ‘humiliating’ GPs, she’s never afraid to speak her mind.
Her plain-speaking manner and staunch opposition to privatisation have won her plaudits from the grassroots.
Perhaps fittingly given her omnipresence, she was uniquely shortlisted this year as both a true champion of general practice and pantomime villain, after ruffling feathers when her Hurley Group beat local GPs to an urgent care centre contract.
One thing is for sure: whatever Dr Gerada gets up to in 2012, you’re sure to read all about it.
