3. Dr Mark Porter

The consultant anaesthetist does not mince his words when it comes to fighting GPs’ corner.

He started off his tenure in 2012 by pledging to defend doctors against “unprecendent attack” from Government.

And among a long list of criticisms of the Government this year, Dr Porter has accused ministers of turning GPs into ‘border guards’ by introducing fees for non-EU migrants and fragmenting the NHS.

He has also slammed Labour for its ‘politically motivated’ idea to introduce a 48-hour GP access target.

At the BMA Annual Representative Conference he accused the Government of a double pronged attack by opening up the health service to private providers while simultaneously inflicting cuts. He argued doctors would ‘fight every day’ until the general election to expose the chronic lack of investment in the NHS.

With debt-ridden hospitals facing special measures and general practice warning of the worst crisis in its history, this year he will not be short of things to shout about.
