One thing you might not know about GMC chief executive Niall Dickson was that he was once a BBC health correspondent.
Previously best known for his time at the King’s Fund, Mr Dickson moved to the GMC in 2010.
In a role that is never going to be viewed favourably, this year has seen Mr Dickson having to tackle a surge in the number of complaints against doctors which it blamed on increased access to the internet and social media and negative media coverage, and accusations that revalidation is not up to the task.
He is also set to face opposition from the profession as proposals for tougher sanctions for doctors are debated in more depth during a consultation this year.
He will inevitably have to steer the GMC over a few hurdles in the next year.
