Parenting and weight loss classes on the NHS timetable

Our round-up of the health headlines on Thursday 8 September.

As the Health and Social Care Bill passed from the House of Commons to the House of Lords, Prime Minister David Cameron faced embarrassment as medical leaders, including the RCGP's chair Dr Clare Gerada, rejected his claim that they support the Government's health reforms.

Meanwhile GPs have been ordered to ration the number of patients they send for life-saving cancer scans to save money, the Mail's front page declares. The cuts are being brought in by a quarter of cash-strapped PCTs despite Government pledges to give GPs better access to cancer tests in the hope of saving 5,000 lives a year.

The Mail also reports that parenting classes may be provided on the NHS to all parents in a bid to improve children's upbringing whilst research from the Medical Research Council has found that people referred to Weight Watchers by their GP are twice as likely to lose weight as those who receive standard advice from their family doctor the Telegraph reports.
