Your Country Needs You…. to read today’s round up of health news

By Lilian Anekwe

Our roundup of the news headlines on Thursday 6th May.

I'm amazed that there's any space for health stories at all in the news today, on this momentous and grave occasion, where today we stand on the very brink of historic change.

It's incumbent upon all of us, as citizens of this great nation, to seize this once in a lifetime opportunity to perform our civic duty, and vote. I'm talking, of course, about Britain's Got Talent.

If there's a GP out there reading this who is capable of making differential diagnoses while juggling fireballs and singing 'Sweet Escape' by Gwen Stefani – then dude, you've got my vote.

The Sun has the next best thing – super-talented monkeys who have been trained to perform duties for troops injured in Iraq and Afghanistan. Amazing.

The Daily Mirror and others have a story about mum-to-be Shona Stacey, who had a lucky escape – she didn't know her baby was hours from death until doctors performed a routine scan on her broken arm. Imagine, finding a baby while scanning someone's arm…. Sometimes things turn up in the most unexpected places, don't they?

Women with high-pressure jobs are at significantly higher risk of developing heart disease, says the Daily Telegraph and a woman writing this very Daily Digest at frantic speed while her editor barks at her to demand her presence in a meeting to discuss how hard he will have to crack the whip to ensure up to the second news coverage and razor-sharp political analysis during the general election today. Sigh.

Because of the tightness in my chest and the shooting pains in my arm I have no time to tell you about the health stories in the Daily Mail so will restrict myself to the following juicy tit-bits.

NHS patients are being denied a 'miracle' cancer drug, a controversial stem cell therapy trial may offer hope for patients with multiple sclerosis, and a bad night's sleep might put you at risk of diabetes.

Spotted a story we've missed? Let us know and we'll update the digest throughout the day...
