New premises for flooded GPs

By Alisdair Stirling

GPs whose practices were devastated by the Cumbria floods last year could benefit from a brand new £11million premises.

The Derwent House and South Street Practices in Cockermouth were destroyed last November and have been operating from temporary buildings since December.

A planning application has been submitted to Allerdale Borough Council for a new LIFT-funded community hospital which will combine GP and community hospital services on one site in 2012.

Dr John Howarth, a Cockermouth GP and NHS Cumbria's Clinical Director, said: 'This is an important step for healthcare in Cockermouth and the surrounding area. GPs, community nurses and other healthcare staff are already working together to provide improved care for patients both inside and outside the hospital.'
