There is support out there for GPs wishing to prolong their career, and many options available.

Think about reducing hours – and how this will affect your pension

The first consideration if you’re approaching this age range is whether you really are determined to retire, or if another option, such as reducing clinical hours or working more elsewhere, could keep you within the profession.

Of course, this is an individual decision, dependent on multiple factors, including your mental and physical wellbeing.

More practices are now offering flexible schemes, and yours may be amenable to this concept, even if your routine has been part of the practice’s furniture for decades. There are incentives for them to do this via the retainer scheme.
