27 – Dr Kailash Chand

Dr Kailash Chand spent 25 years as a GP in Ashton-under-Lyne until becoming chair of NHS Tameside and Glossop in 2009.

Dr Chand is not your typical NHS manager though, and he makes our list for his dogged campaigning against the NHS reforms, particularly through regular comment pieces for the Guardian.

Within the BMA, Dr Chand has been an active member on a number of committees, including the BMA Council and the GPC, the equal opportunities committees and the international committee.

At the end of 2010 he received the Order of the British Empire from the Princess Royal, after being recognised in the Queen's Birthday Honours for his services to the NHS.
