20. Professor Mike Pringle

Professor Mike Pringle comes in at number 20 in the 2013 Pulse Power 50. He has fallen 13 places from last year’s list.

New RCGP president Professor Mike Pringle last year retired from his practice on the border of Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire, where he had worked for more than 30 years.

An emeritus professor of general practice at the University of Nottingham, he has previously chaired the RCGP and led on revalidation for the college.

Arguably, his greatest achievement is inventing the significant event audit now a highly important clinical audit method. His seminal study on SEAs in general practice in 1994 paved the way for it to become a major plank in patient safety.

Of the past year he says: ‘I adore meeting GPs, especially in their practices. So the visit to the Western Isles of Scotland to hear of the challenges and rewards of life for doctors there was a high point.’

The downside was ‘listening to politicians making out that all the NHS’ ills – from A&E waits to the ageing of the population – are our fault.’

Professor Pringle’s advice to young GPs is: ‘I very much hope that they get as much pleasure and reward from their career as I have from mine. The main thing is to remain focused on what matters most – our patients.’
