The Shetland island of Lerwick is in the middle of the North Sea, 200 miles from the nearest teaching hospital, yet Dr Murphy has managed to keep maternity services going and is a ‘powerhouse’ of GP training.

A drive to make cuts to transport has seen more Shetland patients transferred to the mainland by ferry, rather than air ambulance. This has made life tough for the maternity department at the Gilbert Bain hospital, which Dr Murphy runs. Yet this GPwSI in obstetrics has enabled it to thrive, recruiting other GPs to work there and keeping his surgery afloat despite being down two GPs.

He is also lead GP at Lerwick Health Centre, where he manages four GPST4s, alongside colleague Dr Martin Jones.

What he says ‘My main achievement has been just managing to keep my head above water while juggling practice, training, mentoring, ANPs, obstetrics…’

What others say ‘Without Dylan’s determination to see GP training there succeed, I fear we would now have no GP training in Shetland at all’
