35. Dr Surina Chibber

Named as one of Pulse’s Rising Stars last year, Dr Chibber has gone from strength to strength over the past 12 months, ensuring the website she founded continues to offer important support to locums, while also giving advice to thousands of trainees.

Her goal is to ‘empower the sessional workforce with independence, autonomy and support’ and through her website, My Locum Manager, she has been achieving just that.

Those nominating her say her toolkit software, which allows GPs to manage their work diary, invoices, and pension forms, has saved them ‘so much time and effort’ and is a ‘refreshing change from the large locum banks’ usually on offer.

Dr Chibber herself is clear about the reasons why locum GPs should be empowered: ‘There are some corporate sectors which look at the sessional workforce as a commodity to utilise, but we are an integral part of primary care and being a sessional GP is more than a job – it’s our livelihood’.

She has also cast her net wider this year, by taking up education and training opportunities to help others.

This has included supporting trainees by running career workshops, as well as mentoring medical resit students, says the locum GP, who practises in Wandsworth and Hounslow.

As for upcoming plans, her next project involves looking at ways to support GPs with self-care and to reduce burnout.
