Social media has been instrumental in the politicisation of Dr Samir Dawlatly, one of a new army of GP bloggers.

It started with setting up a number of projects including ‘GP Confidential’, an experimental online peer support group for GPs.

And has led to him mobilising more than 800 signatures protesting about plans by Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt’s plans to ‘name and shame’ GPs over missed cancer diagnoses and getting a 650-signatory letter published in the Daily Telegraph.

The Secretary of the RCGP Adolescent Health Group and GP in Birmingham believes a period of great change is facing the profession with the NHS being privatised “fairly openly”.

“It seems that the NHS is being set up to fail, with the GPs in charge of commissioning via CCGs, to provide politicians with someone to blame when it eventually falls apart,” he adds.
