RCGP plotting sale of London headquarters amid ‘changes in working’

The RCGP is ‘engaging’ its members on leaving its current central London headquarters, it has announced.

The college has been based at 30 Euston Square since 2012 but ‘significant changes in the environment since the pandemic’ have reduced the amount of office space required to operate, it said in a statement. It is therefore ‘engaging our members, staff and a wide range of stakeholders’ on a move to a ‘new right-sized London HQ’.

As well as the impact of post-pandemic work patterns reducing demand for office space, the college said changes to the MRCGP exam have negated the need for an examination centre within the building; and cited its inability to find ‘willing’ tenants to sub-let office space at market rental levels.

In a joint statement, RCGP chair of trustees Professor Mike Holmes, chair-elect Professor Victoria Tzortziou Brown, and chief executive Mark Thomas said: ‘30 Euston Square has been our home for 13 years but with RCGP’s 75th anniversary approaching, we need to look to the future and make sure we have an HQ which is right for our next chapter.

‘We acknowledge all the members and colleagues who have contributed to making 30 Euston Square the asset that it is. Should we ultimately make the decision to move to a new HQ then we will take the best of this with us, celebrating those who have helped us.

‘This is not a decision we will be taking lightly, and we are engaging our members, staff and a wide range of stakeholders on our preferred option.’

During the engagement, the Euston Square building ‘will continue to operate as normal for the foreseeable future, with no change to any of the events and conferencing delivery’, the RCGP clarified.

….and RCGP should at least know that two wrongs don’t make a right 🙄

At last. I had put down a question for next AGM about this albatross. I have been complaining about this nasty empty building for years. Cannot blame COVID either.., it was failing before that. No facilities for members nor fellows. I have to use RSM. If you go into RCGP all you meet is security staff who accost you as what you are doing there. But as there is nothing to see or do there as a fellow, there is no answer to that, so leave.

“Plotting”?? Not simply “planning”??

What a lovely headline, perhaps redolent of medicine’s fine history of treachorous plots and deceptions.

The RCGP are plotting once more!
