Final GP seniority payment figures published

NHS digital has published the final GP seniority factors for the 2013/14 financial year, which were at £88,724 for England and £84,454 for Wales.

For England, this is less than the interim figure used, which was estimated at £96,183, and will mean an average seniority payment for GMS GPs of £5,716.

For Wales it is similar to the interim estimation which had been set at £84,479, and will mean an average payment of £5,591.

The final seniority factors are calculated once data from GP tax returns has been collected and the average superannuable income from GPs is known.

Seniority factor payments were introduced as part of the GMS contract in 2004 and were designed to reward GPs’ experience but the 2014/15 GMS contract began to phase them out.

There will be a 15% year-on-year annual reduction until they are completely scrapped from 2020.
