New acting CMO named

By Steve Nowottny

Professor Dame Sally Davies has been named as the new interim Chief Medical Officer for England, and will take over from Sir Liam Donaldson when he departs at the end of the month.

Professor Davies, who comes from a medical research background, is currently Director General of Research and Development and chief scientific adviser for the Department of Health and NHS. Her own research interests focus on sickle cell disease, while she also chairs the UK Clinical Research Collaboration Board.

She will be taking on Sir Liam's role on a temporary basis while the search for a new permanent CMO takes place over the summer.

Sir Liam Donaldson announced in December that he would be departing after 12 years in the job, making him the longest-serving chief medical officer of modern times. He steps down on 31 May.
