4 – Dr Hamish Meldrum

The former GPC chair remains hugely influential in the profession as chair of BMA council, a position he has held since June 2007.

Dr Meldrum has continued to bang the drum for general practice since taking on the wider remit, and has ensured GPs retain a strong voice in the PR battle with the Government.

He has helped spearhead successive BMA campaigns against the privatisation of the NHS – Support Your Surgery and Look After Our NHS – and has not been afraid to tackle the big issues, recently calling for concerns raised from a pilot of revalidation to be made public.

He overcame minor embarrassment last year when it emerged his practice had jointly won a tender for a Darzi centre, despite Dr Meldrum's vocal public opposition to the rollout.

What he says

‘One of my passions has always been to get doctors in all areas to work as co-operatively as possible. I've always taken the view that, when you are not happy about something, you can either sit on the sidelines and moan, or get in there and try to change things.'
