GP practice asks patients to pick up prescriptions from petrol station

A GP practice in central Wales has directed patients to pick up repeat prescriptions from a petrol station while it temporarily closes this week for the expansion of its facilities.

Four Crosses Medical Centre – a branch surgery of Llanfyllin Group Practice – will close for a two-week period beginning on 25 November whilst a new roof is erected.

As a result, scheduled prescription collections will available from the main dispensary, Llanfyllin surgery, in the mornings and the local petrol station in the afternoon – one mile away from Four Crosses practice.

Powys Teaching Health Board assured that full services will continue at the other premises in Llanfyllin and Llanrhaeadr during the temporary closure and added that the practice will temporarily close again in January for further redevelopment of the facilities.

According to Four Crosses’ website, the petrol station will be staffed by dispensary staff from Llanfyllin.

The statement said: ‘Any prescriptions that are scheduled for collection during this two week period can be collected from either: the main Llanfyllin surgery dispensary between 8.30am and 1.30pm Monday to Friday or the Premier Store (RJ&JE Lewis) petrol filling station in Llandrino (SY22 6SB) between 2.30pm and 5.30pm Monday to Friday.

‘The Llandrinio collection site will be staffed by Llanfyllin Group Practice dispensary staff on these days, but they will only be permitted to hand out prescriptions and arrange your re-order for the following month. Any medication queries or other surgery responsibilities will be dealt with by team members at the Llanfyllin site.’

The redevelopment of Four Crosses consists of an extension to the building to increase to three GP consulting rooms, a new phlebotomy and treatment room, and an expansion to the waiting area.

GP partner at Llanfyllin group practice and lead GP for the project Dr Sarah Breese said: ‘We are making great progress towards the completion of this exciting development by spring 2020.

‘We do apologise that during the building schedule there will be some temporary changes to our services to ensure that essential work can take place as quickly and safely as possible.’

Dr Mel Plant, senior partner at Llanfyllin Group Practice, said: ‘This development has been made possible through a primary care improvement grant from Welsh Government, along with funding from Llanfyllin Group Practice and a generous patient donation.

‘The practice team is delighted that we will be able to offer our patients new facilities and more services closer to home.’

Normal services will resume at Four Crosses practice on 9 December.
