Welsh GPs to get £1.75 extra per flu jab as a ‘Covid supplement’

GP practices in Wales will be remunerated an extra £1.75 per flu vaccination this season on top of regular reimbursement.

The ‘Covid supplement’ is to cover the additional costs of safely providing immunisation during the Covid-19 pandemic, the BMA said.

Like the rest of the UK, the Welsh Government has added additional groups to the flu programme this year in a bid to protect NHS services from being overwhelmed with both flu and Covid this winter.

The supplement applies to the regular cohort of patients eligible for flu vaccinations, and the new group who live with somebody who is shielding.

BMA Wales is still negotiating an enhanced service to cover the other additional people which will become eligible for free flu jabs later in the season, aged 50-64.

The BMA said in a letter to practices: ‘Following negotiation with Welsh Government, we have secured a £1.75 per vaccine supplement to cover the additional costs of safely providing immunisation during this difficult time.’

GP practices in England will continue to be paid at last year’s rate of £10.06 per dose.
