33. Dr Iona Heath

Dr Iona Heath comes in at number 33 in the 2013 Pulse Power 50. She has fallen 14 places from last year’s list.

Dr Iona Heath has stepped down from her role as president of the RCGP, but remains an inspirational figure.

A GP in Kentish Town, north London, from 1975 until 2010, Dr Heath is internationally renowned for her writing on the ethics and core values of general practice.

As a member of our panel put it: ‘If I’m ever in doubt, I ask myself, “what would Iona do?”’

Described this year as ‘a peerless writer and a force for humanitarian general practice’, Dr Heath weighed into the debate over QOF targets for hypertension in an article in JAMA Internal Medicine this year, arguing that they were leading towards overtreatment.
