Manchester-based Dr Seher Ahmed was this year elected as RCGP AiT committee chair, promoting GP specialty training and supporting new GP trainees.

The reduction in GP training applications is a particular concern, she says, and she is about to submit her Masters thesis on improving GP recruitment.

Her highlight of the year was being invited to Japan to talk about UK general practice training, something she describes as a ‘stirring experience’.

‘In Japan, they are still working against the grain to establish primary care as a recognised speciality and seeing them battle for this with such passion and dedication was humbling.’

She says there’s often misinformation about general practice at medical school due to a lack of awareness about what the modern day GP does. We need to ‘celebrate the clinical diversity and relative autonomy we still possess,’ she adds.
