2012 the year in review: The David Brent award for Managerial Excellence

Professor Malcolm Grant, chair of the NHS Commissioning Board, wins this award for the second year running after managing to further ingratiate himself with GPs by claiming they could be found ‘out playing golf’ rather than treating patients. He later claimed his quip at the NICE conference in May was meant to be ‘light-hearted and humorous’, but the joke fell rather flat among the GPs in the audience, one of whom later said it ‘went down like a cup of cold sick’. On current form, you wouldn’t bet against him securing an unenviable hat trick next year.

Runner-up for this award is Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. The country’s largest hospital trust was forced to ask GPs to ‘proactively track’ all urgent referrals for suspected cancer after somehow losing crucial information on hundreds of patients.
